Implications of Libya's Political Situation on Bluefin Tuna

The political unrest in Libya will likely effect the production of Bluefin Tuna in the Mediterranean Sea this Spring. If civil war continues in the region, the situation could also have an impact on prices for New England Tuna as well... There is a great deal more at stake than Saif al Islam Gaddafi's small Bluefin ranch at Shabiat Elmergeb near Zitan in Northeast Libya, or the production from four small tonnaras located between Gazira and Garibulli in the Gulf of Sidra. Although Libya has 48…See More

I think this is a great idea, John. It would really be something to see some tagging returns on North Atlantic Bigeyes! Let's hope the improvement in Bigeye production (both recreational and commercial) over the past two years continues. The…

Matkku, You obviously feel very passionate about saving the Bluefin, however you dont seem to know a great deal about the species or the market conditions in Japan. Much of what you have written here is factually incorrect. For starters, CITES has…

Boycotting Toyota or any other Japanese corporations makes absolutely no sense as far as Bluefin tuna is concerned. Automobile manufacturers have nothing to do with fishing. And Japan is compliant with the quotas set by ICCAT, and harvests…

It's the smart move John. Even though BET production at the canyons has improved quite a bit over the past two seasons, Bigeye stocks in the North West Atlantic are in much worse shape than Yellowfin right now. When I have a ittle more time I…

John, CITES only deals with the international trade of species. There is no "language" about catch restrictions, fishing effort, etc. It's going to be up to the individual countries to decide on their own how to handle their fisheries…

Hi Dennis - I see you changed your profile picture. No need to hide your sportfishing roots if that is the case. A lot of us here fish for tuna (sport and commercially) and trying to conserve the resource with good practices. Let me know what your affiliation is with bluefin tuna.

Thanks,
John
