Angling Category Way Over Quota in 2009 on Bluefin Landings

Here are the 2009 Bluefin tuna landings as reported by HMS / NMFS. Note that the Angling category went way over quota landing 565.9 metric tons on a quota of 260.6 metric tons. Most of the overage occurred in the large school - small medium sized fish which are 60lb to less than 235lb tuna. This matches up with the size of the fish in two large cohorts we are seeing off the Carolinas in the Winter and North along the Mid Atlantic and North East states in summer. Any feedback on these numbers… Continue

Bigeye Tuna Added To Atlantic Tuna Tagging Project

Good news to announce today, as we are adding Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus) to the ATLANTIC TUNA PROJECT. As we saw last year in the canyons for a short 2 week period, bigeye tuna are incredibly special. Large, nomadic, aggressive, wolf pack hunters and wily, the bigeye is a treasure that we must fight to protect. So today we are officially… Continue

Buy a Ford, forget Toyota, save the bluefin tuna

Hello!

Good to notice that there are other people with same kind of values, same kind of worries. To me a species like bluefin tuna is invaluable. Its value cannot be measured in money, but I think that our only way to influence is to use the language of money, I think that it is the only language they will understand.

Below is an e-mail that I have posted in Finland and Italy so far (substituting Ford for Fiat). I hope that you would do the same in…

USA Bluefin receational Fishery...Angling category

Hi John, if you can? make time to go to the NMFS HMS AP meeting beginning on May 11th for 3 days. An agenda is published ahead of time, when I get you a copy I could send it to you. It appears (not formally released yet) that the USA angling category is over by an enormous amount.

Your care program can help control this if the scope was re-enforced by NMFS. I would speak on your behalf and could also get some other AP's on your side also. No harm in trying.…

Happy medium

Any idea why the Japanese just don't understand if the Bluefin go extinct then they aren't going to have Bluefin sushi anymore? Yellowfin goes next, Albacore blah blah.

WHY are they so ignorant? Anyone? Seems they just don't like listening to anyone.
