To: HMS/NMFS/NOAA, Commercial & Sport Fisherman: Thanks & We Can Do This!

I attended the public hearing on Highly Migratory Species (Bluefin tuna are categorized as such) in Plymouth Massachusetts last night organized by the officers of the HMS Division which is part of our government's agency NMFS (National Marine Fisheries Services). So this is the Fed of fishing. I have to say, I was impressed by the professionalism and organization/presentation by HMS officers. It's always in the details and they are doing small things like giving copies of their deck out for… Continue

Female GreenPeace Bluefin Tuna Activist Beaten By Pirates

Again John Hocevar from Greenpeace sent SaveTheBluefin this update from the decks of the Rainbow Warrior stationed in the Med. Although this video is graphic (men beating on women), as John correctly states, will serve as a step in the right direction as this video alone has significantly increased awareness on a global basis.

Dear Emma (the Greenpeace activist who took the brunt of the violence):

From all of us here on… Continue

BBC South Pacific - Series 1 Episode 6 (last episode)

The most successful wildlife documentary of all time was the Blue Planet produced by the BBC perhaps around 2004. It has the most amazing images of yellowfin tuna feeding on bait balls. Watching such documentaries, you could be forgiven for asking: overfishing?, what problem? This dire lack of "we don't tell people what to do, eat/we don't do environment, we just like to show the wilderness" was overturned in the last episode of South Pacific, series 1 episode 6. It is still available at the… Continue

NOAA Meetings to Discuss BFT Management - FL, LA, NC, NJ, MA

NOAA has announced a series of meetings to discuss management of BFT. All the details are here: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms/newslist/2009/06-17-09_ANPR_Reminder_Notice.pdf

There are some really important issues that will be discussed- including proposals that lift restrictions on long-lining tuna and lower the minimum size for commercially caught bluefin.

I don't see how this can be good news. Everyone concerned should attend to ensure that their voices are heard!

Bluefin Tuna Lead Actor In New Film, GreenPeace & DeNiro at War!

Hold your breathe when you see this trailer. As sad of a story as this is, I am excited we are finally bringing the fight to Save The Bluefin! onto center stage. The riveting film called THE END OF THE LINE, which was filmed over two years, follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover (who btw is not on Twitter) as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, about the ongoing damage we are doing to our oceans. The bluefin tuna is center… Continue
