Big Game Fishing Journal Tags The Tuna Project

Captain Len Belcaro, owner of the popular Big Game Fishing Journal ran the first full article on the Atlantic Tuna Project in the July/August 2010 issue. Thanks Len for being one of the first to recognize the benefits of the project and to deem it worthy enough for your readers. No surprise, as a result of the article running we had many anglers sign up for the project. …

Big Yellowfin, Pole Caught, Years Ago

Fascinating video. I hate the part where they shoot the shark but if you can get over that there is someting to this footage. No by catch, no taking the entire school like a seiner, no killing of juveniles if you want too - maybe this is the way forward. The price would be higher for tuna caught like this, certianly the meat would be in better condition, but this may be the answer. And of course the narrator is worth the price of the 10 minutes to watch the video. Now… Continue

Tuna Tagging Program Is Rocking! Care Package Production Line!

I'm up late with a cold can of Tecate and my donations from sponsors packing tuna "tagging member" care packages for mailing and hand delivery to participating charter boats. At the moment I am preparing packages for Canyon Runner, Fish N Chips and Exile Sportfishing. The incredible yellowfin bite in the canyons and the near shore bluefin have charter captains and their anglers really excited to join the program and get involved in tagging…

Video - Mako Shark Maims & Eats Live Seal

(Warning - this video is raw & violent) One of the most detailed videos I have seen of a mako shark feeding in the wild on a seal, shot off Catalina Island in California last week. You have to feel bad for this seal, who obviously got caught off guard. But aside from this raw look at ocean life, the shark's behavior of violently thrashing the seal on the surface is extremely… Continue

66% More Bluefin Last Year Says NOAA

HMS/NOAA's bluefin tuna landings report to June 30th shows more bluefin were caught last year, 707 in 2009 versus 472 this year so far. That's a 66% decrease. I have heard reports that the quantities are still there, but the bigger fish are showing less. I will try and dig up more on this report and get…

Canyon Runner Putting On A Clinic With Yellowfin

The Canyon Runner fleet is putting on a clinic catching yellowfin tuna this year in the Hudson Canyon. We are all happy to see the fish return after the last 2 seasons as Capt. Mark & Co. are consistently limiting out on yellowfin, bringing back tired and beat up charters. Here is a great quote from Adam LaRosa on a recent fishing… Continue
