Began this season with tag kits on the boat. Tagged 3 on Sunday. Mixed size from 8lbs to 30 lbs. You should have them in the mail this week. Simple easy fast and fish released with no harm. We actually captured a tag in one of the fish that was from ICCAT Madrid Spain!!! Awesome. Will keep you posted on the details
Comment by John LoGioco on July 17, 2012 at 7:30am Wow Mike - great post and great picture! Please post about the ICCAT tagged bluefin you caught. Did you re-tag it with our tags?
Hi John,
I will certainly keep you posted on the ICCAT tag details. Unfortunatley we did not re-tag it. It was a larger fish and after clipping tag and getting measurements it was time to let her go. I wish I did tag it but didnt want to extend the time with the fish out of water.
Comment by John LoGioco on July 19, 2012 at 4:43am ok great. nice story. how big was it?
Hi John - Here are the details of the tag recapture I just recieved from ICCAT. AMAZING STUFF!!!
The fish was originally tagged in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of Spain in August 2011
It measured 23.6 inches and weighed 9.8lbs when tagged.
Recapture was July 2012 - Fish grew to 32 inches and weighed approx 30 lbs
Distance travelled was 3544 miles with 339 days of liberty between tag and recapture.
This is the second fish that ICCAT has ever recaptured that went trans-atlantic!!!!
Amazing to see how much that fish grew in 1 year which is consistant with the other tagged fish that was recaptured. Imagine that journey that small fish took???? WOW!! Great to see the tagging results and information we can gather by tagging fish. More people need to get involved!!! Keep up the great work!!!!!
